Case Study

When should I play All-in vs Hedge?

The best way to understand the optimal strategy is to map out the payout curves for each Pick'Em. To do this, we calculate the expected value at various given average fair odds prices. By looking at the graph, we can easily see which Pick'Em offers more value.

For the 3-leg Pick'Em, we can see the EV for All-In is always greater than the EV for Hedge (when EV is greater than zero). This means we should always play All-In, if we want to maximise our EV.

For the 6-leg Pick'Em, we can see actually the EV for the Hedge option is mostly above the EV for the All-in option. Although the difference is not much. However, if we want to maximise expected value, we should play the Hedge option. It is only if the average fair odds of each leg in the Pick'em is less than ~1.73 (very unlikely to find prices this low), does the optimal EV change over to playing All-In.

What is the Pick'em EV Tool?

The Pick'em EV tool identifies legs that you can use in your Pick'em that are mathematically profitable. We calculate the fair market odd for a given bet and then compare that price to the breakeven threshold for your Pick'em to be positive EV.

How does Pick'em work?

At its core, a Pick’em bet asks you to predict whether specific players will achieve Less or More than a given statistical projection (like points scored, assists, rebounds, etc.). Each player you choose is known as a leg, and the overall bet’s potential payout increases with each added leg. The more legs you add, the higher the payout. They offer two options: All-In: all legs must win for a bigger payout Hedge: one, two or three legs can lose and you will still receive some money. If all legs win, the payout is less than the All-In option.

How many legs should I play in my Pick'em?

This is a personal choice. Our recommendation for beginners is to stick to 2-leg and 3-leg. Once you get comfortable with the Maths and have a big enough bankrolll, you can play 5-legs. Anything above 5-leg and the variance becomes super high that is is probably not worth it.

Is the Pick'em EV Tool suitable for all types of betters?

Implementing the Pick'em strategy is quite easy. You just put the bets into a Pick'em. But it is a more advanced startegy because you have to handle very high variance. This strategy should only be used by those who understand the risks.
