How do you turnover bonuses bets with Betfair?

Turning over your bonus bets with Betfair is the process of turning a bookmaker's bonus bet into withdrawable cash by laying off the same outcome on a betting exchange like Betfair.

Bonus bets in Australia are almost always SNR (Stake Not Returned), which means if your bet wins, you only get the profit, not your original stake back. That changes the maths compared to a normal bet, but it also creates a clear arbitrage opportunity. By placing the bonus bet at the bookmaker and laying the same outcome on Betfair, you can lock in a guaranteed cash return whether the bet wins or loses.

The higher the back odds, the better your conversion rate. Bonus bets at 5.00 odds or higher typically convert at 70% or more, meaning a $100 bonus bet returns around $70 in real cash.

How to Use the Betfair Bonus Turnover Calculator

Once you've received a bonus bet from your bookmaker, enter the required data into the calculator and it does the rest. The tool takes the bonus bet amount, the back odds, the lay odds on Betfair, and the lay commission, then automatically calculates the optimal lay stake and your locked-in profit.

You'll have to enter:

  • Bonus Bet Amount: The dollar value of the bonus bet from your bookmaker

  • Back Odds: The decimal odds you're placing the bonus bet at

  • Lay Odds: The lay odds available on Betfair for the same outcome

  • Lay Commission: Betfair's commission rate, typically 5%

The calculator returns your lay stake on Betfair, your liability, and the locked profit you'll walk away with regardless of which side wins.

Betfair Bonus Turnover Example

Let's say you've received a $100 bonus bet from your bookmaker and you want to convert it into cash. You decide to back Manchester City to win the Premier League at 5.00 odds. On Betfair, the lay odds for the same outcome are 5.20 with the standard 5% commission.

Enter Bonus Bet Amount ($100), Back Odds (5.00), Lay Odds (5.20), and Commission (5%) into the bonus bet conversion calculator.

Bookmaker (Back)
Betfair (Lay)
Stake
$100 (bonus bet)
$77.67
Result if back wins
+$400.00
-$326.21
Result if lay wins
$0.00
+$73.79

If Manchester City wins the league, you collect $400 in profit from the bookmaker (stake not returned) and lose $326.21 in liability on Betfair, for a net profit of $73.79. If they don't, the bookmaker bonus bet loses but Betfair pays out $73.79 after commission. Either way, you've converted $100 of bookmaker funny money into $73.79 of real cash, a 73.79% conversion rate.

How to Maximise Your Conversion Rate

The conversion rate on a bonus bet is driven entirely by the back odds. Higher odds mean better conversion, because the formula rewards you for taking on longer-shot outcomes where the bookmaker's profit (if the bet wins) is larger relative to the stake.

A few practical tips:

  • Aim for 5.00+ odds: Conversion rates jump significantly above 5.00. At 2.00 odds you might only convert 30-40%, but at 5.00+ you can hit 70-80%

  • Match back and lay odds closely: The smaller the gap between back and lay, the higher your conversion. Use Betfair's order book to find the tightest available match

  • Use the right markets: Outright winners, futures, and longshot markets typically have higher odds. Match winners on heavy favourite vs underdog matches also work well

  • Check the lay liquidity: High back odds are useless if there's no money on Betfair to lay against. Always confirm the available liquidity before placing the bonus bet

Important note: The conversion rate calculation assumes the bonus bet is SNR (Stake Not Returned). If your bookmaker offers SR (Stake Returned) bonus bets, the formula is different and your conversion rate will be much higher. Most major Australian bookies use SNR, but always check the terms before placing.
