Half Point Calculator

Buying or selling a half point can shift a losing bet into a winner, but sportsbooks don't always charge a fair price for it. The half point calculator works out what that fair price should be, so you know exactly what you're paying for.

Half Point Calculator

Work out the true value of buying or selling a half point on any spread or total. Uses historical scoring distributions to estimate the fair odds at the new line.

What is a Half Point Calculator?

A half point calculator tells you the fair odds for moving a spread or total half point in either direction before you decide whether it's worth paying for. Sportsbooks let you buy or sell half points on markets like NFL spreads, NBA totals, and AFL or NRL line bets, but the price they charge for that move isn't always fair value.

Here's the idea behind it: every number carries a push probability, basically the chance the final result lands exactly on a given number. Some numbers get hit a lot, like 3 and 7 in the NFL, or common goal-kick margins in the AFL. These are worth more to move off than numbers results rarely land on. The bigger the push probability on a number, the more a half point either side of it should cost.

Example

Let’s say a sportsbook has the Broncos -3 at 1.91 and the Chiefs +3 at 1.91. Moving to Broncos -2.5 shifts the price to 1.80. The push probability on 3 (how often NFL games are decided by exactly a field goal) tells you whether 1.80 is fair value for that half point or whether the book is overcharging you.

How Our Half Point Calculator Works

Select your league and bet type, then enter the current line and the odds on both sides. The calculator returns the fair price for the half point directly above and below your line, so you can compare it against what a sportsbook is actually charging.

Select your bet type and league, then enter the current line and odds, and choose to Buy or Sell on Move Line. The calculator returns the fair price at the new line, so you can compare it against what a sportsbook is actually charging.

Inputs

  • Bet Type: Spread or Total

  • League: NFL, NBA, NCAAF, NCAAB, MLB, AFL, or NHL

  • Line: The current spread or total, e.g. -3 or 44.5

  • Odds (Side A / Side B): The decimal odds on each side of the line, e.g. 1.91 / 1.91

  • Move Line: Toggle between Buy and Sell, depending on which direction you want priced

Outputs

  • Current odds: The line and odds you entered

  • Fair odds at New Line: The new line, based on your Buy or Sell selection, and its fair odds

  • Odds Difference: The gap between your current odds and the fair odds at the new line

  • Push probability: The probability of the result landing exactly on the new line

  • New Implied Probability: The implied win probability at the new line

Example

Say an NBA total is set at Over 44.5, priced at 1.91. You want to know what it should cost to sell that half point up to 45.

Enter 44.5 as the Line, 1.91 as the Odds, and set Move Line to Sell.

Line
Odds
Current
44.5
1.91
Fair At New Line
45
2.03
  • Odds Difference: 0.12

  • Probability of landing on 45: 3.20% (this is the push probability)

  • New Implied Probability: 49.16%

If a sportsbook charges more than 2.03 for Over 45, selling that half point is poor value. If they're offering 2.03 or better, it's worth taking.

How to Use the Half Point Calculator

  1. Select your league and bet type.

  2. Enter the current line and the odds on both sides exactly as shown by your sportsbook.

  3. Set Move Line to Buy or Sell, depending on which direction you want priced.

  4. Compare the Fair At New Line odds against what a sportsbook actually charges to move.

  5. If the sportsbook's price beats fair value, that half point is worth buying or selling. If it's worse, stay on the original line.

Half Point Buying/Selling Tips and Strategies

  • Target key numbers: In the NFL, focus on 3 and 7. In the AFL, margins often cluster around goal-kick multiples. Moving off these numbers is usually better than moving off a random one.

  • Skip flat numbers: Totals and spreads that rarely land exactly on a whole number, like 44.5 in the NFL, aren't worth paying extra to move.

  • Compare across sportsbooks: Every book prices half points differently. Run the numbers through the calculator before you commit to buying or selling.

  • Selling can pay off too: Moving a spread away from a key number, not just towards one, can still carry value if the push probability backs it up.

  • Be careful in high-variance markets: NBA and AFL totals swing more per possession, so half points there are usually worth less than the price sportsbooks charge for them.
