What is a Hedge Bet?

A hedge bet is a wager placed on the opposite outcome of a bet you've already made, using the current odds available at that time. It guarantees a profit or limits a loss, regardless of how the event finishes.

Hedging is most useful when odds have shifted by a lot from your original bet. This often happens with futures markets (like an outright tournament winner) as the field narrows or with in-play markets once the game state changes.

For example, you back a team to win the Grand Final at 5.00 odds before the finals series starts. That team goes on to reach the decider as hot favourites, and the market now offers strong odds on their opponent. Placing a hedge bet on the opponent at those new odds guarantees you a profit no matter which team wins.

Understanding the Hedge Bet Calculator

Working out a hedge stake by hand means solving for the exact amount that makes both possible payouts equal, which is easy to get wrong when you're doing it quickly on a live market. The hedge bet calculator removes that guesswork. Enter your original bet and the current hedge odds, and it instantly returns the stake needed to guarantee an equal profit across both outcomes.

Common use cases include:

  • Locking in profit on a futures bet once your team reaches the final stage of a tournament

  • Reducing risk on an in-play bet when the game state turns against your original selection

  • Cashing out manually when your bookmaker doesn't offer a native cash-out feature, or its cash-out offer is poor value

  • Managing long-term outright bets as the market narrows and the outcome becomes clearer

  • Protecting profit on a promotional or bonus bet before the market closes

How to Use the Hedge Bet Calculator

The calculator needs three inputs:

Field
What to enter
Original Stake
The amount you staked on your original bet
Original Odds
The decimal odds you got on that original bet
Hedge Odds
The current odds available on the opposite outcome

It automatically calculates your Hedge Stake and your guaranteed profit.

Example

Let’s say you bet $50 on a team to win at 3.00 odds. During the match, that team takes a strong lead, and the live odds for their opponent to complete a comeback win go up to 8.00. You decide to hedge by backing the opponent at those odds.

Enter Original Stake ($50), Original Odds (3.00), and Hedge Odds (8.00) into the calculator.

It works out the hedge stake for you automatically.

Regardless of which team wins, you walk away with a guaranteed profit of $81.25 on a total outlay of $68.75.

Keep in mind that hedging trades away some potential upside. If you'd let the original bet ride and it won, you'd have collected $100 profit instead of the guaranteed $81.25. Hedging is about certainty, not maximising the best-case return.
