What is a Middle Bet?
A middle bet, also referred to as middles, is a strategy where you bet on both sides of a spread or totals market when the lines are different enough to create a gap between them. If the final result lands inside that gap, both bets win. If it doesn't, one bet wins and one loses, keeping your overall loss minimal.
Middle bets work on two types of markets:
Spreads: A spread bet involves betting on whether a team will win by more or less than a set margin. For example, if one bookmaker has the Hawks at -3.5 and another has the Nicks at +6.5, the middle is any final margin between 4 and 6 points. If the Hawks win by exactly 4, 5, or 6 points, both bets win.
Totals (Over/Under): A totals bet is a wager on whether the combined score of both teams will be over or under a set number. If one bookmaker offers Over 46.5 and another offers Under 48.5, the middle is any combined final score of 47 or 48 points. If the game lands on either number, both bets win.
The key difference between middling and arbitrage is the guarantee. An arb locks in a profit on every outcome. A middle gives you a chance to win both bets while limiting your losses if the middle doesn't hit.
Middle Betting Example
Let's say you're betting on an NFL game between the Atlanta Hawks and the New York Knicks on the totals market.
Bookmaker A offers: Over 46.5 at odds of 1.90. You bet $50
Bookmaker B offers: Under 48.5 at odds of 1.90. You bet $50.
Here's how each outcome plays out:
If the total score is 47 or 48 points, that’s a hit for the middle, and both bets win. If it misses, you lose your stake on the losing bet while the winning bet covers most of that loss. That's the appeal of middle betting. High potential profit and controlled losses.
How to Use the Middle Bet Calculator
The middle betting calculator takes five inputs and automatically works out your upper line stake and expected returns.
You’ll have to enter:
The Lower Line: The smaller spread or total (e.g., 46.5)
The Lower Line Odds: The decimal odds for the lower line bet
The Lower Line Stake: The amount you want to stake on the lower line
The Upper Line: The larger spread or total (e.g., 48.5)
The Upper Line Odds: The decimal odds for the upper line bet
The Upper Line Stake: Calculated automatically based on your inputs
For a total stake of $100, if the middle hits, you make a $90.00 profit. If the middle misses, you lose $5.
The wider the gap between the lower and upper lines, the more scoring combinations fall inside the middle, and the higher your chance of winning both bets.
